Interior Hardware, Light Fixtures and Other Finishes
In the chapter on kitchens, I talked about how changing out your cabinet hardware can give you the biggest bang for your home-improvement buck. The same is actually true for all of the hardware in your house. Upgrading door handles and knobs throughout your house is an affordable way to give your interior space a fresh and modern look of luxury. In fact, I’m always amazed at how often prospective tenants comment on these finishes when they inspect a rental property. But it makes sense. We usually think about the impact a space makes in terms of what it looks like. But door hardware adds a second sense to the impression—the feel of a clean, quality knob or handle can make a strong impression. And door hardware can be a DIY project. Usually, the new set can simply be fitted into the holes left by the older set. If larger holes are required, be careful not to chisel too much wood from the hole, or the mechanism won’t work properly. Just as important, always put the knobs on the doors before you close them. You’d be surprised how many people I’ve seen lock themselves into a room by closing the door to check a fit before putting the knob on. I usually help them get out. But not right away.
New, stylish light fixtures also go a long way towards updating the look of a home, and they don’t have to cost a lot. Even new receptacles and switches can add to the clean and modern look of a home. When I am upgrading a property, I use the switches that have the large, flat, rectangular switches and receptacles that have the same rectangular centres. And I opt for white.
